Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable prosthetic device that enhances your existing dental structure by filling in the spaces caused by missing natural teeth. For example, if a patient is only missing their two front teeth on their upper arch, they could wear a partial upper denture to replace those two teeth.

More often than not, partial dentures can utilize the existing dentition by clasping specific teeth and using them as anchors for added stability. In such cases, a partial denture is superior to a complete denture in terms of retention and, therefore, performance. This is especially true for the lower arch, which presents anatomical restrictions that work against dentures. As a result, suction is much more difficult to achieve with lower dentures due to the tongue and surrounding muscle attachments acting as competing forces against the dental prosthesis by constantly moving in many different directions. Thankfully the added retention provided by clasped teeth can help partial lower dentures stay in place by resisting those competing forces.
