Denture Care

Did you know that routine denture care can do a lot more for your dentures than simply keep them looking shiny and new? Similar to how a regular oil change will help you get more mileage out of your car’s engine, daily maintenance of your dentures will also extend their lifespan in addition to keeping them looking pristine. Although dentures obviously don’t last forever, daily maintenance will have your dentures looking and performing half their age, so it is highly-recommended that you follow the tips below to keep them in top shape. Conversely, neglecting these helpful habits will likely have the opposite effect on your dentures – and you will unfortunately be the one who suffers as a result.

Here are some easy-to-do tips to help you get the most out of your dentures:

  • Clean your dentures twice daily (morning and evening) with a toothbrush and liquid soap to remove bacteria and calculus buildup caused by food debris. We recommend using a soft toothbrush and avoiding all abrasives (ie: toothpaste, baking soda, exfoliants, etc.) to prevent the protective coating and polish on your denture from being stripped away.

  • Soak your dentures overnight in a glass cup or container with a suitable denture cleanser to prevent bacterial growth. This tip also yields the added benefit of helping you avoid denture hyperplasia (severe inflammation/irritation of gum tissues), which can occur if you wear dentures while you sleep.

  • If possible, rinse your dentures under lukewarm water after every meal.

  • When rinsing or soaking your denture, make sure the water is as close to room temperature as possible. If the water is too hot, it can warp the acrylic.

  • When storing your dentures away, always be sure to keep them submerged in water because dentures that are left out in a dry environment for too long can distort and change shape.
